Writing about the role of SimCity in developing a systems-oriented mindset
At first, used it like a canvas: choosing which buildings went where, using zoning as a way to make grass.
Could not for the life of me figure out how to make the utilities work. Water, electric… when I would play the real game, couldn’t get it to work.
Lots of trial and error, ultimately helped me understand how to get going.
Then it was about money, making the city budget work. At first I would just use cheat codes to give me unlimited money. Then i figured out how to make the taxes work, and trades with neighbors, etc.
It’s interesting to think about that time between proliferation of computers and video games, and the ubiquity of the internet. I couldn’t just log on and watch videos of people playing the game, or read reviews or tutorials. I had Game Informer for a couple years, and sometimes they would write about a game I was playing. But otherwise, you’re on your own.
